The far-left American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) called on the United Nations to demand that the United States hand out reparations to African-Americans over past issues such as slavery.
According to the Washington Free Beacon, the ACLU, along with several other left-wing groups such as Human Rights Watch, sent their demands to the U.N. Committee on the Elimination of Racial Discrimination, calling on the international organization to force Joe Biden to announce “immediate, tangible measures” to “dismantle structural racism” in the United States.
Biden, the groups argued, must be called to “provide effective remedies, including reparations for racial discrimination, including ongoing structural discrimination that flows from the legacies of slavery.” The coalition argues that Biden, despite actions he has already taken to combat so-called “systemic racism,” has not gone far enough in their opinion.
“The Biden administration has shown it can name the problem, but the time has come to take bolder action to radically transform these abusive systems and fully implement U.S. human rights obligations,” said ACLU spokesman Jamil Dakwar in a statement.
The groups made several suggestions of their own, including the creation of “a commission to study the need for reparations and develop specific remedies for the enslavement of people in the United States and its myriad legacies.” The ACLU also said that the government should crack down on trends that allegedly have “a racist effect or impact,” including “mass incarceration.”
